This is not a post about income inequality. This is a post about the “other” ninety-nine percent. This is a post about the statistical fact that 99 percent of perpetrators of rape walk free among us.
I’ve received a great deal of backlash over some recent posts I have written about a particular individual and the rape he committed last summer against the babysitter of a young girl he has in his custody. He raped me in his house with a gun in the room. I had been drugged. And with all the doors in the house open, I didn’t dare make a sound for fear of waking the little girl I was hired to watch over.
I have been called names. I have been accused of child abuse and falsehood. Attacks have been made on my character. I have been threatened by an “army” of his supporters. And I have allowed their comments to proliferate both on my social media as well as my blog not only because I believe in freedom of expression, but also because I am lucky enough to have an army of my own – an army of loving supportive people in my life.
These people make me strong – strong enough to take those attacks and use them to illustrate a critical social issue. People need to see what happens to survivors of rape when they choose to speak out. If you’ve been following my social media or blog lately, you can see for yourself that it’s not pretty. It’s not kind. And for a person who has survived rape – which is an invasive attack on an individual’s sense of self – even the thought of facing such scrutiny is unbearable.
It is the knowledge that I wield truth along with the support of my closest friends that gives me this strength. And I couldn’t ask for two stronger pillars on which to support myself. This isn’t just about me. This is about all survivors and their right to be heard. Sadly, we live in a broken world that strives to break those who do use their voice.
I will not be broken.
I will continue to do everything in my power to protect all women and girls from victimization. It’s not just about me and this isn’t just about Cole and his “army” either… it’s about all of us.

As I reflect on this past year in blogging, this is one of the most popular posts I wrote in 2018. When survivors of sexual assault speak out, they take on the risk of knowing some people won’t believe them and they will be attacked for doing so. I am one of the “lucky” survivors who is able to speak out in relative safety – so I feel I must speak not only for myself, but also for those who are unable to for themselves. I know you’re out there… and I believe you.
