OPENING SCENE
BELLE: Hey, do you remember?
SCREEN FADES FROM BLACK AND WE SEE A CLOSE-UP OF BELLE’S FACE. SHE IS MIDDLE-AGED WITH DARK HAIR, BROWN EYES, AGE SPOTS, AND A FEW LINES ON HER FACE.
BELLE: Do you remember on our honeymoon there was this couple in the airport. The wife was screaming at her husband because he had forgotten to pack the toothpaste. The poor man did everything in his power to placate her, but she would not be assured. We looked at each other and smiled, shaking our heads at how we never would become one of those couples – a couple that fights simply for the sake of fighting. You would never let me down so much that it would drive me to irrational fits of anger and I would never nag at you over something so meaningless as lost toothpaste.
CAMERA PANS OUT AS WE SEE BELLE IS WEARING A GREY SUIT WITH A PINK SHIRT UNDERNEATH AND SITTING ON A WOOD BENCH IN THE HALLWAY OF A COURTHOUSE NEXT TO HER HUSBAND WHO IS ALSO DRESSED IN A GREY SUIT WITH A CHEAP BLUE TIE. HE IS WEARING BLACK SKATER SHOES.
BELLE: Do you remember that, Edward?
ED: Sure. Sure, I remember.
BELLE: What happened to us?
ED: I don’t know. I wish I did. I wish I did so we could go back and do it differently.
BELLE: Yeah, me too.
BAILIFF (OFF SCREEN): Campbell vs. Campbell – the judge is ready to see you now.
THEY STAND TO ENTER THE COURTROOM AT THE SAME TIME. BELLE LOOKS AT HIM WITH A MIXTURE OF PITY AND DISDAIN. ED STOICALLY STARES AT THE FLOOR. SHE WALKS INTO COURT WITH CRISP CONFIDENT STEPS. HE SHUFFLES IN DEJECTEDLY. THE COURTROOM DOOR SWINGS CLOSED AND WE CAN SEE THE WORDS “DIVORCE COURT” WRITTEN ON A PLACARD.
